FUEL Milwaukee Leadership Luncheon with Dr. Victor Amaya
When the City of Milwaukee proposed cutting its down-payment assistance budget by 90%, Data You Can Use helped turn neighborhood-level information into action. The organization prepared district-level data showing who was being served, where homeownership support was needed, and what the proposed cuts would mean for Milwaukee families. Residents and housing advocates used that information to make their case, and the city restored $1M to the program. That is data doing what it is supposed to do: helping people see clearly, organize effectively, and push for change.
Victor at the Helm
At the helm of that work is Dr. Victor Amaya, President and Executive Director of Data You Can Use. Since taking the lead in 2021, Victor has helped grow the organization, increase revenue by 140%, and drive a 400% increase in event participation. Under his leadership, Data You Can Use has expanded the reach of tools like Neighborhood Portraits, which provides detailed reports on 27 Milwaukee neighborhoods, and MKE Indicators, which tracks citywide data across housing, health, population, equity and access, and market value.
A Record of Impact
Victor’s career shows a clear record of impact across Milwaukee’s civic and community landscape, including leadership roles with Milwaukee Public Schools and City Year Milwaukee. His work has also been recognized by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation with the Doug Jansson Leadership Award and by United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County as one of its Philanthropic 5. He also serves in volunteer leadership with the National Neighborhood Indicators Partnership, Southside Organizing Center, Your Move MKE, and Techqueria Milwaukee.
