Tech Connect is a video series by MKE Tech Hub Coalition that spotlights the real voices behind Milwaukee’s growing technology ecosystem. Each episode features candid conversations with local tech professionals on leadership, career, culture, and what makes Milwaukee a place worth building in.

In our fifth episode, we sat down with Blanca Gonzalez, Executive Director of IC Stars Milwaukee, and Mimi Perez, Program Manager at IC Stars Milwaukee, for a conversation that centers on curiosity, authenticity, and the power of Milwaukee’s collaborative spirit.

On continuous learning: Mimi shared that she doesn’t know how to not learn and grow—curiosity is natural and organic for her. At this stage in her career, it’s about advocating for herself and surrounding herself with brilliant minds. Blanca emphasized the gift of being curious outside your own area of expertise, noting that the tech space has taught her to problem-solve across disciplines—whether it’s technology, politics, budget, or finance.

On authentic leadership: Blanca talked about the importance of being your true self and not code-switching, sharing that she tells IC Stars interns she’s not a technologist—she’s a people person, fundraiser, and advocate who wants to help them reach their next destination. Mimi added that leadership means knowing the person at the front of the room isn’t the only leader—it’s about modeling that leadership can look like asking questions, not knowing the answers, and allowing others to lead on strategy and vision.

On what’s uniquely Milwaukee: Mimi described Milwaukee’s incredibly collaborative, small-to-medium-sized town vibe where relationships matter deeply—not just for fundraising or partnerships, but for how IC Stars acclimate interns into the community. Blanca emphasized that Milwaukee wants to see Milwaukee win, and IC Stars develops talent to stay and work locally. She noted that Milwaukee is big enough to move around but small enough to be seen—a huge advantage. With only four degrees of separation, the opportunity to build a career here is significant.

On advice for the next generation: Blanca encouraged the next generation to stay true to themselves, be seen at the table, be heard, and have decision-making ability. She emphasized the importance of continuing to uplift, upskill, and stay curious. Mimi added that IC Stars interns come with a different point of view and set of experiences that are highly valued in the tech ecosystem—and that awareness of their unique value will be a game changer.

On the power of networks: Mimi shared that she’s never had to find a job on a job board—she’s always found opportunities through her network. In a small city like Milwaukee, relationships open doors. Blanca added that your network is your net worth, and keeping it alive is essential.

On creating momentum: Blanca emphasized celebrating the wins rather than always focusing on what needs improvement. Mimi agreed, noting that momentum is created by celebrating wins as a team and individually—highlighting each person’s superpower rather than focusing on weaknesses. Both reflected on how Milwaukee’s tight-knit tech ecosystem supports each other, from sharing technology to participating on panels, and how national investments like Microsoft’s data centers show that Milwaukee is moving in the right direction.
