In our third episode, we sat down with Sumathi Thiyagarajan and Dr. Mike Dairyko of the Milwaukee Bucks for a conversation that spans technical expertise, leadership evolution, and building the future of tech talent in Milwaukee.
On unexpected skills: Sumathi shared that learning there isn’t always one right answer was a game-changer in her career—finding the middle path that aligns analysis with organizational goals. Mike echoed this, adding that soft skills like communication became far more critical than technical prowess as he moved into leadership. If you can’t articulate the value of a machine learning model, it’s worthless.
On digital transformation: For the Bucks, digital transformation means meeting consumers where they are. Sumathi emphasized personalization and using data to genuinely improve people’s lives, while Mike highlighted how the organization has invested in embedding technology into every facet of the business, growing their analytics team from three to eight people.
On fostering innovation: Both guests emphasized curiosity as the foundation of innovation. Mike stays connected with industry peers across sports and beyond to learn how others are solving problems with technology. Sumathi highlighted the Bucks’ collaborative culture, including hosting a regional business strategy and analytics conference to share best practices and position Milwaukee as a hub of knowledge.
On shaping Milwaukee’s tech future: Mike is deeply engaged with local universities, influencing curriculum and mentoring the next generation of data professionals. Sumathi reinforced that the Bucks’ role is to stay innovative, share openly, and amplify the work of others in the Milwaukee tech community—because no one has to build from scratch when you can learn and grow together.
